Art Deco

1920-1930

Art Deco is appeared in France just before World War 1 but it become popular in 1920s - 1930s.

Art Deco influenced at lot weather it is everyday object like radio, vacuum cleaner and etc or design of building, furniture, fashion, jewelry, cars etc.

Art Deco is anything that represent luxury, glamour, lavish, patterns, layers and symmetry. Art Deco is mainly full of colors, busy looking, grand and blond space. Art Deco is influenced by Greek, Roman, and Egyptian styles, as well as Aztec designs. Popular ornaments include chevrons, sunbursts and zig-zags. Figures and portraits are highly stylized. Mythological creatures and gods are other common design elements.

Architect in Art Deco

The characteristics of the Art Deco style include geometric and angular shapes, chrome, glass, shiny fabrics, mirrors and mirror tiles. Natural motives like shells, flowers and sunrises are also popular traits of the style.

The most famous examples of Art Deco architecture in America are the Chrysler building (1930) and the Empire State building (1931) and American Radiator Building (1924) all of these are in New York City.

The Chrysler building was the tallest building in the world for 11 months before being surpassed by the Empire State Building. These buildings demonstrate classical Art Deco’s style.

The American Radiator Building is a landmark skyscraper located at 40 West 40th Street, in midtown Manhattan, New York City. It's architects was John Howells and Raymond Hood, and built in 1924 for the American Radiator Company.

Posters in Art Deco

the Art Deco style was first appeared in Graphic design. earlier in Art Nouveau the poster are generally about cabarets or theatrical products but in Art Deco travel poster were initial made for steamship liner and airliners and later focus shifted more for product advertisement. the poster were became more simpler, precised and more dynamic with single color background and larger, fancy & retro style fonts.

Graphics in Art Deco

Graphic were  full of blings and complexity, repetition of geometrical shapes and cubical shaped intersecting each other and darker shades of backgrounds can be seen in Art Deco style graphics design. these famous graphics can also be seen in the movie Great Gatsby featuring Leonardo Dicapiro and Toby Mcguire

Sculptures

The Sculptures in Art Deco style were purely decorative. the sculpture were mostly of heroic figures and symbolic figures. the sculptures were not only for museums but they were designed to enhance the beauty and aesthetics of office building and government building, public squares and private salon. some of famous sculptures of Art Deco were grand firgural female nude statue, mademoiselle modele statue etc.

Industrial Revolution

Industrial revolution started in Britain in 1780s. It spread in England, Europe and North America and all around the world. This period included going from hand to machine power, new chemical manufacturing machines and iron production processes. In this period, canal, road and rails were built. Textiles was the most important industry for employment in this period. Agricultural revolution was also started in this period.

Mass of iron and steel structure built in this period like iron bridge station, iron railroad station, iron market place. They invented building material like wrought iron, cast iron, steel and glass. New chemical manufacturing and iron production process were improved in this period. Iron bridge station, Eiffel tower, Crystal Place, Birmingham new street station was also built in this period.

Many inventions took place in this period like the motorwagen in 1888 by Carl Benz, Quad bike by Henry Ford, kodak pocket camera.

Steam engine invented by James Watt in 1785, bikes are also built in this period in 1885, toilet bowls and many more.

Thomas Edison invented light bulb in this period. He spent 18 months, 1200 experiments and $40,000 to make first commercial incandescent light bulb. Sewing machine was invented in 1790 by English inventor Thomas Saint.

Britain had made around 75% of their profit through farming in this period but in winter they can't work in field so, they started working with wool for making clothes and this give birth to cottage industry. Women were engaged in many aspects of industry and agriculture and they have to work forcefully and with low wage rates.and this gave birth to Capitalism.

Increase in industries and production houses also lead to increase in pollution which is still a big issue for our present environment. Child labour existed before the Industrial Revolution but with the increase in population and education it became more visible. Many children were forced to work in relatively bad conditions for much lower pay than their elders, 10–20% of an adult male's wage. Children as young as four were employed. Beatings and long hours were common, with some child coal miners and hurriers working from 4 am until 5 pm.

I have created a design scheme for reading area based on industrial revolution. All the materials are locally sourced from NZ.

This is my design scheme for modern Gothic era bathroom. I have chosen this lamp as this has pointed arch and it resembles Gothic architecture. Concrete flooring and window shows dark and shady side of this era. Light colors of tub and candle stand shows there light after darkness. All materials are sourced from New Zealand.
